It’s customary on this page for us to air our views on the week’s issues. But with so many mixed messages from operators (some doing well, others suffering) and so much uncertainty in the market (truck and van registrations up, but fuel prices are still at crippling levels), we’re turning this page over to the changes you would love to make to the industry, as drawn from our Trucking Britain Out Of Recession survey (p14-15).

“Fuel duty is causing difficulties to break even, let alone make a small margin. Invest in roads to improve the flow of traffic. Allow longer vehicles on primary trunk routes. Put restrictions on hauliers to prove that they have the good repute to operate in the industry and increase penalties for those that aren’t compliant.” “Cut fuel duty right now. Then impose harsher penalties on the cowboys.” “Without commercial transport, the UK wouldn’t survive – the general public should be made aware of this – with the subsequent result of better rates for an essential service.” “[Address] fuel cost, clamp down on foreign drivers’ tacho breaks and their driving, rogue traders; give British jobs to British hauliers not foreign companies; get the government to start helping British hauliers.” “Fuel duty is killing business.” “Stop pre-packs!” “We’ve got to plan for the future.” What else needs to change? Let us know.
