Birr-base d haulier Frank Whitten, MD of Whitten Transport, has little duff tufty with customer

service: "I've been working for the same company (Banagher Concrete) since 1975.Imust be keeping them happy to be here that length of time."

Good service, efficient drivers and reliability for the customer are the key factors in satisfactory client services, he believes. Whitten stresses that reliability is the overriding feature of good service. "We must be there for the people," he says. "So far. our customers haven't said anything negative to us."

Whitten's 10-strong fleet dates from 1996 to 2004 the most recent acquisitions are two Scania 164s purchased last year. The quality of his fleet is of paramount importance to Whitten.

"We bought special equipment to transport heavy loads throughout Ireland," he explains. "This includes extendible trailers."

The company specialises in conveying concrete beams for bridge construction in, for example, the building of bypasses at sites including Monaghan, Castleblaney, Fermoy and Mitchellstown, Co Cork.

"We have done nearly every bypass including the Naas Road which is only starting," he adds. Whitten takes stock of his business every six months. "It is very hard in our business," he points out. "For instance, Banag her now wants a different type of trailer."

Employee/employer relations are good, says Whitten: "Some of our men are with us over 20 years." His staff include nine drivers (his three grandsons did mechanical work during their summer holidays) and his wife and daughter.

The company is involved in charity work in the Birr community, including providing trucks free for collection and delivery to any location in the country.

Whitten attends four IRHA council meetings every year. He cites attracting new members as the biggest challenge for the association: "They want a lot of stuff done for them."
