Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Unions are claiming that British Bakeries is closing both its Cambourne and Exeter bread distribution depots, putting 59 drivers out of work.

A spokesman for the company confirms the closure of the Cambourne bakery only: "It's closing because of the highly competitive nature of bread distribution," he says. But he was unable to comment on the Exeter closure.

Road improvements make it cheaper to service customers in Cornwall from the Plymouth and Avonmouth depots, unions claim. Thirty-three drivers' jobs will go when Cambourne closes on 1 October and a further 26 drivers will go when Exeter closes on a date which is yet to be decided, say the unions. Some jobs will be created at Plymouth to handle the extra workload.

"Alf the trunking for the entire south-west network will be done From Avonmouth and Plymouth," says URTU regional officer Peter Rendoll British Bakeries' depot in Warmley, Bristol, will be closed and the operation transferred to a purpose built extension to the Rank Hovis McDougall-owned Family Loaf Bakery at Avonmouth depot to handle the extra work, says Rendall. Up to 25 trunk drivers and van salesmen are expected to be transferred there From Warmley. British Bakeries is owned by Rank Hovis McDougall, which is owned in turn by engineering group Tomkins.
