DOW FREIGHT boss Roger Dowsett has been left unsure of the effect on potential customers of police action at his company.
Five people associated with Dow Freight were arrested, without warrant, in synchronised action in Southport and Swindon. The arrests, made at the end of last month, followed
investigations by Greater Manchester, Wiltshire, Thames Valley and Humberside forces. The police suspected fraudulent evasion of vehicle excise duty.
They took away documents and later released all five on bail until October, when they are required to appear at a police station. No charges were made.
Mr Dowsett said he was not worried about existing business. He told CM: "Our existing customers are fully aware that Dow Freight is a reputable company." But he was worried that potential customers might be reluctant to make contact.
And he was critical of the police: "The level of police action was absolutely ludicrous," he said. A large number of police and Customs and Excise officers had appeared at Southport. If a single policeman had gone to the depot the records would still have been freely and readily available, he said.
"We will be quite pleased when we understand exactly what they are looking for," he added.
