Jim Smith is a self-made man, as the saying goes. He started a hire-car business with a Ford Anglia in 1961. Npw he is head of Smith-Self-Drive Ltd, he owns 800 vehicles and has depots in Rotherham, Sheffield, Leeds and Doncaster.
His latest acquisition, a Ford Transcontinental 42-ton-gross tractor, was doused in champagne by Alvin Stardust, a pop performer, who was the first to hire it to haul his massive lighting and other equipment on a Continental tour. He obviously does not hide under a bushel.
David Steinburg, depot manager, was once in show business and has attracted various pop stars, including one with the unlikely name of Garry Glitter. I admire Mr Smith for not changing his name in the face of such dazzling competition. He might have succumbed to the temptation to call himself Hiram A. Ford.
