LETHORA of small vans de by the simple expedient of ding in a panel in place of an 3te car's side windows have the market since someone — bably Bedford with the Chene — discovered that there is larket for comfortable, welllipped light vans.
)ur ng the year, two of these le our way — the first from )SS the Channel, a Peugeot I. Based on the estate car of same name, the Peugeot ins all the home comforts of elation. It also uses the same 90cc (79cuin) transversely
d petrol unit developing :W (65bhp) and driving the it wheels through a foured all-synchromesh gearbox. :another set-up a la Mini.) n the Peugeot's case, ugh, there's little space er the bonnet to carry out 3r than day-to-day checks of anc water. The cross-flow nder head arrangement sn't help either, with the 3ust manifold in front mas3 things like the oil filter, ad of that is the small radian one side, and the battery -I what looks to be a vulneri position -next to it.
Jot so cramped, though, is dr ving compartment. A afo table driving position Id be obtained with the il adjustable seats. Inimentation, including a .3do, temp gauge, clock and gauge, is binnacle-mounted easily seen through a twoked steering wheel. Good rard vision is also a plus it, but it was difficult to see far behind in the rear view or when loaded, as the sus3ion settled very low.
.mall side mirrors, adjustonly with a screw driver i't help either. So noticeable he rear settlement that geot provides a manual dipdevice to accommodate the age in the vehicle's attitude, )ugh this feature is common leir cars too.
ccess to the load space of Peugeot, which has a level ad floor, is via a single lift-up door. There is a waist-high head to retain cargo within area, but the available space n by sloping wheel-arches the rear suspension surds.
n the road, the Peugeot )rrred with some verve, the 30cc engine being more
than adequate and free-revving. A firm ride, without being hard, was experienced unladen, but laden, in spite of an even load distribution, the weight had some detrimental effect. Under full throttle, the front wheels were easily induced to spin, while sudden movements of the steering wheel produced a soggy response.
As usual with car-derived vehicles, braking was excellent, with 1g stops every time. Despite a hard feel, the brake pedal gave reasonable progression. A brake pressure limiter is fitted to prevent rear wheel locking when unladen. Fuel consumption wasn't as great as one might have expected, with a fully laden figure of 11.4 lit/100km (24,7mpg) and an unladen result of 7.8 lit/100km (36.1 mpg). These figures are adequate without being startling.
Summing up, we felt the Peugeot's chief fault lay in its direct derivation from an estate car. This, coupled with poor engine accessibility, didn't hold it in good stead as a working machine. Nevertheless, it is a comfortable, well-equipped vehicle with lively performance. For those looking for a slightly up-market van, it is reasonably priced.
