the Prior Committee of inquiry into motorway service areas has been highly critical of the service provided for Britain's long distance lorry drivers, and the committee findings coincide largely with the opinions of CM staff who use the services regularly.
The report covers everything from the cost of diesel to the cost of food and it did not take long for the committee to learn what the long distance driver has to tolerate to get through a day's work.
Few of the areas, in our experience, offer proper balanced meals and it comes as no surprise that the Prior Report has recommended an increase in the number of qualified caterers employed.
The appointment of inspectors will surely hasten the day when standards will be equal to those of Germany and Italy.
Rescue services have not escaped the attention of the committee and its proposal for a Motorway Services Area Board appointed by the Department of Transport should tighten up the rather loose arrangements operated today in this vital area of Transport.
The committee has done its job and its recommendations should be acted upon quickly. Clean confortable accommodation is not merely a matter of prestige it is also a large factor in safe driving.
A well rested, properly fed driver is a safe driver and for that reason the implementation of the proposals should be immediate.
