But for Torn Kerr it was a six-year-old ambition fulfilled. He has been driving for Esso Bowling, Strathclyde, for eight years and this was his sixth entry in the competition.
And for Tom's victory the sun shone on the CM LDoY's new home at Cranfield, Beds, and a crowd of up to 20,000 people were on hand to watch the master take the laurels.
Now Tom Kerr has the Coventry Trophy presented by Leyland Vehicles, the wrist watch presented by Chrysler UK, a £150 cheque from the Ford Motor Company, a £125 cheque from Commercial Motor, plus the Michelin European Study Award worth over £1,000 which goes to both the winner and his entrant.
The tour will involve Tom Kerr in visits to the Michelin Test Centre at Ladoux, to a French haulier and to Saviem at Caen. His French tour will also take in a visit to Paris and the opportunity to drive French vehicles on French roads.
As'well as all that, Torn received a study course in the Certificate of Professional Competence worth £250, presented by the Road Transport Industry Training Board and a £30 book voucher from the United RI Transport Union.
Second-place man Tom N rick received the Transport General Workers Union Trop £75 from Vauxhall Motors, E from Commercial Motor Chrysler wrist watch, and a E book voucher from the Uni Road Transport Union.
G. Masson, in third pla takes home the Goodyear T and Rubber Company Trop £50 from Vauxhall Motors £50 from CM; a watch fr Chrysler and a £10 bc voucher from URTU.
The BSM Industrial Tror goes to K. M. Clark in fou spot, plus a £25 award from National Guild of Transp Managers and a pair of Ci Bi-Oscar lights from Cibie UK
