Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

INDUSTRY would save E3.2m each year if an AberdeenDunblane motorway is built to link north east Scotland with Britain's trunk road network.

This is the conclusion of a Freight Transport Association study into the 116-mile Aberdeen-Dunblane A9/A85/ A929/A94/A92 route which was prepared for pro-road group Transport Action Scotland.

It says that an increase in road standards will lay the way open for drivers and unions to agree to higher speeds for the Aberdeen route.

ETA says that a 32-ton lorry now completes the journey in 4.8 hours. Improvements already authorised will advance this to 4.08 hours, while a motorway would reduce the journey time to 2.8 hours.

It goes on to say that higher speed limits, raised weight limits, and increased road safety all help to lower operating costs when vehicles use top-class roads.

Reduced driving hours, as scheduled under EEC social regulation 543/69,will increase road transport's running costs, but FTA believes this can be counterbalanced by improved roads.
