Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

TFIE Daimler Co.,. Ltd., are now making three sizes of passenger-vehicle chassis, the C.K. type on a 13-ft. 6-in. wheelbase, the CJ.J. type on a 15-ft. 6-in, wheelbase, and now the C.M. type on a 16-ft. wheelbase. The first of the long-Wheelbase models were delivered two Months ago, and, after being fitted with extremely handsome bodies, they have created an excellent impression upon their purchasers and upon the passengers who have ridden in them.

The power unit employed in all three models is the 36 la.p. four-cylinder silent sleeve-valve Daimler engine, with Ferrolite-alloy pistons and a three-bearing crankshaft. The cylinder bore is 104.5 rum. and the piston stroke. 150 mm. The engine develops its rated power at 1,000 r.p,m. and 45 h.p. at 1,500 r.p.m. The lubricating oil is circulated by a multiplunger oil pump through troughs, the level of which Varies according to the position of the throttle, so that the depth to which the dippers are immersed increases with higher engine speeds and diminishes with a reduction of speed, so that the supply of oil, is proportionate to the work being done by the engine. The carburetter is a Zenith and ignition current is provided by a magneto. The control of the engine is effected through an accelerator pedal, the minimum setting lever for the throttle being mounted on the dash.

The power is transmitted through a fabric-faced cone clutch held in engagement by a single volute spring, with two bolts projecting from the spring cover to the flange on the clutch-withdrawal sleeve. Adjustment of the clutchspring tension is effected by giving a turn to the nuts on these bolts. Provision is made for lubricating the ballthrust bearing to the clutch spigot. Font speeds and reverse are provided by the gearbox, which has short stiff shafts. The gear lever is mounted on the right hand of the driver, where is also the brake lever.

The propeller shaft on the long-wheelbase model is kept short to prevent whipping. A special extension shaft from the gearbox to the propeller shaft is fitted, Which has a flexible coupling at the gearbox end and a ball bearing at the propeller shaft end to take the thrust. The propeller shaft is fitted with ball-bearing mechanical joints and tele

scopic couplings. There are two flexible couplings between clutch and gearbox.

The final drive is through a Daimler-Larichester worm and worm wheel, which is claimed, on the authority of tests by the National Physical Laboratory, to give from 93 per cent. to 97 per cent, efficiency under all conditions.

The frame is a flitch-plate wood and steel construction, strongly cross-membered and reinforced from just in front of the forward bracket for the rear-spring hanger to the end of the trame. At the rear end of the frame is a frafnework to carry a luggage boot, the petrol tank depending from about the centre of the chassis, with its filling orifice brought to "the near side of the vehicle. The capacity of the tank is 25 gallons, Alternatively, a side tank will be supplied.

The steering gear is a complete worm with worm-nut, adjustments being provided for end movement of the worm and for side play on the worm wheel, whilst in the event of wear developing between the worm and worm wheel the latter can be turned into "another position. The radiator is the usual type—built up with a cast-aluminium top and with gilled copper tubes.

The brakes, operated by hand and by foot respectively, act on independent drums on the rear wheels. All four pairs of brake shoes are interchangeable.

Long semi-elliptic springs are fitted at front and rear, those at the rear acting as radius and torque rods. The wheels are of pressed steel equipped with solid tyres (in which ease the price of the chassis is £700) or with pnenmattes at a higher price. If the tyres are 36 ins. by 6 ins. front and 40 ins. by 8 ins, at the rear the extra price is £104, the rims then being detachable, whilst if 36-in. by 6-in. tyres are used all round, twins at the rear, the wheels themselves are detachable and interchangeable, and the extra price is £84,

The wheelbase of the C.M. type is, as we have said, 16 ft., the overall length of the chassis being 24 ft. 4 ins. and the platform space from the dashboard to the rear of the frame 20 ft. 5Ains. From the dashboard to the centre of the rear axle the length is 13 ft. 10. ins. The minimum ground clearance is 10 ins, and the turning circle 60 ft.
