EFFICIENTLY to carry wheat, either in bulk or in sacks, it is advisable to utilize a special type of body, and one such is illustrated as applied to a Foden steam wagon which forms part of a hard-working fleet of vehicles of this make in the service of King Bros. (Carriers), Ltd., of Stockport.
The vehicle employed is a I2-ft. hydraulic end-tipping wagon with an extra deep body which -can accommo
date 6 tons of wheat in bulk. Although of comparatively simple design, there are several features of particular interest in this body, apart from its capacity. For instance, a mild steel strip, hooked upwards at each end, is carried above each side for the full
length of the body. The door or upper portion of the tailboard is supported on a long rod which passes through the hinges and extends over the steel strips, to which it is secured, whilst the lower portion of the tailboard, which is quite narrow, is hinged at the bottom and can be folded right down as required.
Several advantages are claimed for this arrangement of the tailboard, the chief one being that, in the ,event of the vehicle being required to carry a load of sacks of corn, the upper portion of the tailboard can be pushed along the steel strips to the front of the body, where it remains entirely out of the way. To move it in this manner, it is necessary only to press back two latches, and then, with the lower portion of the tailboard dropped, the back of the vehicle is fully open for loading purposes, and when the loading operation is completed the bottom portion of the tailboard can be lifted and secured in position in the usual manner by pine passing through eyes.
Another advantage of the arrangement is that when carrying wheat MOSE or in bulk a steady flow can be 'obtained while the load is being 'discharged, as the upper portion of the tailboard can remain fixed in positior at the back, whilst the lower portion iE hinged down. The arrangement un doubtedly cuts out a lot of wasted timo in door removal, etc.,
