• Heavy truck sales this year to the end of September are up 5.9% at 43,903. The British share of these sales has grown to 59%, compared to 56% this time last year.
During September sales of commercial vehicles (including vehicles under 3.5 tonnes) reached 28,710, an increase of almost 8% on the 26,609 recorded in September last year. For the first nine months of the year total CV sales rose by 7% to 241,299.
The battle for the top slot in the trucks and artic sector above 3.5-tonnes GVW is hotting up. Iveco Ford Truck has held on to its lead for the second month running. From January to September it sold a combined total of 10,200 vehicles to give it a 23.2% share, ahead of second-placed Leyland Daf which has a 22.6% stake (9,934 trucks sold).
Mercedes is still in third place with a steady 14.4% share (6,306), followed by the rapidly improving Volvo Trucks which sold 4,616 vehicles during the first nine months of 1987 to grab a 10.5% share above 3.5-tonnes GVW.
Renault Truck Industries — shortly to reinforce its range with new models — is currently in fifth place with an 8.6% share (3,799 vehicles sold), followed by Scania with 4.9% (2,168).
MAN-VW is in seventh place with a 4.05% stake (1,780), but is being chased hard by ERF with 3.86% (1,697). So far the Sandbach-based truck builder has boosted its 1987 truck sales by a massive 47%. Seddon Atkinson has a 2.99% share (1,315) with Foden holding a 1.07% share, having sold 470 trucks up to the end of September,
