MEDICAL CONSTRAINTS on the issuing of hgv licences are to become stricter, if notice is taken of the findings of a working party set up by the Department of Transport.
The group has recommended that drivers suffering from a diabetic condition being treated by insulin, or diabetics with uncompensated acidosis should bebarred from holding a vocational licence.
In addition, drivers who suffer from progressive disorders of the nervous system, strokes and insanity due to organic brain disorder will also be stopped from holding a licence.
The group has added that applicants for hgv licences should state at their medical examination whether they drink excessively or take drugs or medication.
The DTp set up the working party in 1977 to review both medical standards and arrangements for enforcing them.
