TRANSPORT UNDER-Secretary Lynda Chalker has called for better responses to vehicle recalls.

The figures for recall campaigns launched between January 1 and June 30 are very good, she said, but there is still room for improvement.

"Each vehicle that is the subject of a recall, but not returned for checking and correction, represents a potential safety hazard not only to the owner but also to other road 'users.

"Checks and rectification work can be arranged to suit the owner without charge. Owners of vehicles which are the subject of a recall should, for their own safety and others, return them to the manufacturer or the dealer promptly," she said.

There have been 35 recall campaigns so far this year, involving 119,852 vehicles. Twenty-two recalls involved goods vehicles, of which 27,558 were inspected.

From July 1980 to June 1982 79 per cent of goods vehicles recalled responded to the call.
