THE FIRST cruise seminar organised by ROADS, the southern based group of Road Haulage Association members set up in 1978, went to Holland last week and was voted a great success by those attending. Talks will be held to find an attractive and interesting venue for another trip somewhere on the Continent next year.
ROADS was established as a co-operative to achieve benefits in such fields as bulk buying and, although southern based, is attracting members from as far as Scotland.
Many members do not engage in international trade, and the seminar, held on board Olau Line ferries plying between Sheerness and Vlissingen, was designed to illustrate that hauliers need not be put off by the complications of taking an occasional load to the Continent.
In particular, Barry Darling, of Willis Faber and Dumas, during the three-day trip went deeply into the important insurance angle, which must be tackled first. Members also heard about import/export documentation. A Shell representative gave an illustrated lecture on the advantages of using the Euroshell credit card service — available in 19 countries and backed by more than 2,500 service stations.
A Daf representative explained his company's International Truck Service, which has a network or around 500 Daf dealer workshops located throughout Europe and the Middle East. The party was led by Dave Allen, managing director of ROADS, the full title of which is Road Operators Associated Delivery Services, based at 39/41 Ramsey Road, Winchester, Hampshire.
