BRITISH hauliers are at a severe competitive disadvantage when they send trucks abroad because of the maximum lorry weight restrictions, the Road Haulage Association claimed this week.
The RI-IA is urging the Secretary of State for Transport, Mr William Rodgers, to modify the regulations.
It wants to allow trucks used on international journeys, and at present limited to 32 tons gross, to carry a payload of 20 tonnes as long as the axle weight limit of 10 tons is kept to.
Continental operators, said DI-IA et tn 11d thpir vehicles to much greater economic advantage.
Any increase in permitted payload meant an increase in productivity and possibly some reduction in congestion.
This suggested increase in payload is seen by the association as an urgent interim measure. Its long term policy is to press for a maximum gross weight of 40 tonnes.
