RIVALRY between Spalding hauliers I N. for profitable flower traffics was referred to by Mr. J. Langham, at the Transport Tribunal on Wednesday. He represented Grouhds Transport Services Ltd., of Spalding. who appealed against a decision of the Eastern deputy LA, Mr. J. Gazdar.
Respondents were Machin's Transport (Surfleet) Ltd., and Parkers (Surfleet) Ltd. Mr. Langham said the appeal was prompted refusal of two variation applications to add two attics to an A licence and two vehicles to a B licence for local collection and delivery work.
There had been a rates dispute between the parties, said Mr. Langham, and the respondents believed that Grounds had cut certain rates. Grounds' customers had increased greatly when the railways ceased to collect flowers in the Spalding area, and the availability of the objectors' vehicles was virtually nil.
It was uneconomic for hauliers to collect flowers for conveyance to the railhead, said Mr. Langham; growers preferred the throughout journey to be by road. Although the traffic was profitable, it was very exacting, involving perhaps 19 pick-ups in a 28-mile collecting round.
The hearing continued on Thursday.
