New Appliances for Handling Vehicles and Components Included in Range of Workshop Equipment

INGENUITy has beet exereiSed and novel principles have been adopted by makers of garage equipment in their efforts to provide operators with efficient appliances. Features of new designs reflect the vitality of this industry, partly stimulated by ideas from abroad.

• " D.P. Liftmaster " is the name given to a new hydro-electric four-post hoist produced by Joseph Bradbury and Sons, Ltd., Braintree, Essex. A vehicle may be raised supported under its axles or the chassis members.

The vehicle is first driven into position up a• pair of ramps. Two longitudinal members are appropriately spaced and wooden blocks placed underneath the vehicle. When raised, accessibility to the underneath of the

vehicle is exceptionally good. . An accessory is the Liftlite, an illumination unit which can be attached to the longitudinal members.

The Weaver Manufacturing and Engineering Co., Ltd., Kathie Road, Bedford, have introduced a portable appliance for raising gearboxes or other heavy components into position underneath vehicles raised on a hoist. The tray on which the component is to be lifted may be tilted and locked in any direction, and raised and lowered by means of hydraulic gear operated by a pump lever.

This equipment is being handled by the Marsham Tyre Co., Ltd:, 207-213 u20 Oxford Street, London, W.1, who also offer the Duquesne hydraulic tyre remover. A Belgian appliance, this works on the principle of pushing the wheel from out of the tyre in an upward direction, rather than mounting the wheel on a stand and pushing the tyre downwards off it. Possibility of bead damage is said to be greatly reduced by this method.

A universal engine transporter is among new items of equipment produced by Mann Egerton and Co., Ltd., 5 Prince of Wales Road, Norwich. The frame members are of steel tubing, which fit into base pieces comprising welded sections mounted on castor wheels.

The frame members are opened and the engine is lowered upon webbing straps. These are tightened as required. The unit costs £15.

A simple tool for rotating a flywheel without damaging the machined surfaces is the company's ring-gear rotating tool. This fits all standard starting gears and. affords maximum leverage in any position.

The company have also improved their welder's trolley. This item costs £7 8s, with rubber wheels or £5 16s. 6d. with cast-iron wheels.

With the degreasing tank newly intro.duced by Wickham Industrial Equipment, Ltd., 34 Victoria Street, London. S.W.1, the object to be cleaned is itself moved on a rising and falling tray rather than being static with the degreasing medium swirling around it.

The tray is driven by an electric motor and has an 8-in, vertical movement, making 30 complete strokes a minute. It will carry weights up to a total of 200 lb. Capacity of the tank is 60-70 gallons and it is 6 ft. 4 in. long, 2 ft. 9 in. wide and 2 ft. 6 in. high. The price is £165.

This concern have also a light-duty steam cleaner operated by compressed air and without any mechanical or electrical parts. Input of compressed air is approximately 21 cu. ft. per hr., and as the burner is designed to use waste oil, with a maximum consumption of If gal. per hr., the economy of the machine should be appreciable. The cleaner is compact -in size and costs £255.

Axle stands of 2-ton and 5-ton capacity are now being made by Epco, Ltd., Skinner Lane, Leeds, 7. In the lighter range there are three models with extensions of 12 in. to 21 in., 18 in. to 30 in., and 22 in. to 36 in.; respective prices per pair are £2 6s. 9d., £3 58., and £3 15s. The 5-ton model has a 204-in. to 30i-in. extension and a pair costs £4 12s. 6d.

Bench space in the wOrkshop or the laboratory may usefully be increased by means of the Rolla-Bench, introduced by the Shandon Scientific Co., 6 Cromwell Place, London, S.W.7. This attachment is a table with drop extension mounted on castor-wheeled legs that may slide along a runner fixed to the edge of a bench. It can be locked in any position.

A remarkable new bench tool, the Surform, is offered by Firth Cleveland (Machine Tools), Ltd., go Stenor, Ltd., 37 Kew Foot Road, Richmond, iurrey. The main feature is a hard-steel blade with 500 cutting edges. The Surform has a -quicker and easier performance than a rasp, does not clog, and can deal with various materials up to the hardness of mild steel. It is available either in the form of a file or a plane. The file costs 12s. 6d. and replacement blades are priced at 3s.

J. F. _Sykes (St. Annes), Ltd., Warwick Works, St. Leonards Road, St. Annes-on-Sea, Lanes, are now making gear and bearing pullers in sizes suitable for application to heavy vehicles, supplementing their range of equipment for lighter models. A feature of this company's tools is that the parts are interchangeable, so that pullers iiith either two or three drawers may quickly be made up. The parts are made of drop-forged chrome-alloy steel for optimum strength.

A valve and valve-scat workshop which sells at £90 is a new product of C.L. Equipments, Ltd., Merridale Lane, Wolverhampton. It consists of a cabinet with a grinder mounted on the top. A diamond dresser may be brought up to the periphery of the wheel to clean it, thus ensuring a mirror finish on the valve being treated. The cabinet contains an electric driver for the re-seating tools, 12 stones and other necessary appliances.

The D.P_45 portable twin-spot welding gun, a product of the A.R.O. Machinery Co., Ltd., 18 Madrid Road, London, S.W.13, incorporates a large transformer which overcomes drawbacks caused by loss of current through short-circuiting across the upper sheet of two to be joined. Spacing of the electrodes may be from it in.:41 in. This novel gun weighs about 53 lb.

A new range of Westalite battery chargers has been produced by the Westinghouse Brake and Signal Co., Ltd., 82 York Way, London, N.J. The smallest type is the B.C.11, versions of which cost up to £11 each. The largest is the B.C.I6, models of which cost up to £82 10s. The output of the smallest type is 12 w. and that of the largest 2,400 w.

The Selcelecta is a novel line of G.S.L. Products, Ltd., Hatton Cross, Great South West Road, Feltham, Middx. It is a battery charger with capacity to charge.24 cells at 8 amp., with additional provision for supplying a 12 v. alternating current at 12 amp. for garage lighting. It is of simple construction and compact and augments the G.S.L. range of engine starters.
