A Hioti performance is claimed by tt Messrs. Erskine Motors, 76-82, Stoke Road, Gosport, for the new Mohawk forward-control 10-12-cwt. delivery van, which has been designed arid constructed in their own •works. It is said to have a top speed of 50 m.p.h and a fuel consumption equivalent to 45 m.p.g.
The power unit is a Coventry Victor horizontally opposed twin-cylindered petrol engine, which is interchangeable with an oil engine if required. A sidevalve model, it has a bore of 85 mm. and a stroke of 80 mm., and is rated at 10 h.p.
Plan white-metal bearings are used for the crankshaft and connecting rods. The aluminium-alloy pistons are retained on the connecting rods by floating gudgeon pins and are equipped with two compression rings and one scraper ring. High-pressure lubrication is provided to all the major components and the engine is water cooled. The petrol version has magneto ignition.
Four-speed Gearbox
A Borg and Beck clutch is specified, together with a Moss synchromesh gearbox, which provides four forward ratios and one reverse. Power is transmitted to the rear axle through an open propeller shaft equipped with Hardy Spicer needle-roller couplings. The semi-floating rear axle incorporates a spiral-bevel final drive, the crown wheel and differential operating on taper-roller bearings.
The brake pedal is connected to the four wheels through cables and rods, the hand brake, of pistol-grip pattern, being linked to the rear wheels only. Conventional semi-elliptic springs fitted to the front and rear axles are controlled by Newton hydraulic shock absorbers. Steel and rubber bushes are fitted to the spring eyes.
The chassis frame and body have been designed for lightness. The frame, o46 which has five cross-members, is fabricated from pressed-steel channel sections, the whole structure being bolted and welded together as a unit.
Of square section, the body has a wood frame covered with aluminium panels, and offers a loading space of 170 cubic ft. Bucket seats are provided for the driver and mate. The cab doors, hinged at the rear, are positioned forward of the front axle and, together with the low frame line
at the forward end of the vehicle, this arrangement provides easy access to the driver's seat:
With the engine positioned between the two seats in the cab, the driver has necessarily to use the off-side door when mounting and dismounting. The body, which has hinged doors at the rear, is open at the forward end, sd that goods may be extracted without need for opening the rear doors at every stop.
