• A new type of roller brake tester is to be installed at every vehicle test station in the UK at a cost of £5m.
The computer-controlled tester can guide the vehicle inspectors through the correct procedure for each vehicle type and can handle the calculations for any braking system. The first tester has already been installed at Bicester, Oxon, where the computer package will be evaluated before going to all of the Vehicle Inspectorate's test centres by 1994.
VI engineer Maurice Eaton, who has been working on the project for four years, says the equipment will ensure a consistent testing procedure because the computer demands that each instruction is followed.
Two prototype systems, one from the UK and one Dutch-built, were looked at by the VI, with the Dutch package winning the contract.
