Rail boost for demountables

Air spring conversion at Munich

;ROWING support by ierMan Hauliers for the iggy-back services run ince 1969 on domestic nd foreign routes , by :ombiverkthr Gmbh was eflected in many of the xhibits at the recent Aunich Container Show. ,n interesting developient has been the marked ndency towards the use f the "BDF standard" wop bodjes in road/rail 7affic while the employ lent of semi-trailers howed only a very slight icrease.

Although the Munich event attracted port and service Organizations, shipping and air lines, container manufacturers and freight forwarders, road transport exhibits provided the major interest. Vehicle, trailer . and bodywork exhibits by practically every German manufacturer — and a handful from other countries were supplemented by handling and loading aid equipment. The domestic BDF standard swop-body and the corresponding chassis demount equipment has now been gen erally adopted hut, at Munich. there was a breakaway from the 7.15m length.

Klaus of Memmingen demonstrated a half-size container which is carried on a 7.5 tonnes gross vehicle to avoid the need for an hgv driver. Under German law a second 3.5mlong box can he towed on a single axle trailer to bring up the gcw to 15 tonnes.

Introduction by DaimlerBenz of air suspension on the rear axle only of certain of the "new gen

eration" chassis follows German practice of using the suspension elements to effect the vertical chassis travel for demountable operation. A Kogel air-bag conversion of one of the lighter Mercedes-Benz chassis meets the growing operator demand for air suspension on .units under 16 tonnes gvw. Other examples of conversion to air springs included a Fiat NC 80 chassis for use in swopbody service.
