The membt rship of TRTA's Central London area reads iike a Debrett of the UK manufacturing ind istry, since so many nationally famous companies have their headquarters there. Small wonder that they manage to get such prominent speakers at their functions. At last week's annual luncheon, for instance, it was the CBI director-general, John Davies.
Mr. Davies was in a philosophical mood, and explained how he saw his task in terms of three general requirements; strengthening Britain's industrial base; ensuring consultation between the governors and the governed; and encouraging the proper use of our national resources. And he turned these neatly into telling points against quantity licensing; by contrast, he used them to express his support of the new user organization of which TRTA will be the major constituent.
Mr. Davies said he feared that the firststage cuts in drivers' hours were now, despite earlier assurances, not going to be geared to any clear improvement in productivity.
Having seen Richard Marsh's TV confrontation with militant drivers at the week end, I share those fears. Though I must say that the Minister handled a difficult situation very well.
