W. E. Bates, traffic manager at British Road Services Ltd. 's headquarters, becomes manager, North Western district, as from December 1. This appointment follows the death of the previous manager, L. Hill. The North Western district, by far the company's largest, consists of 21 branches, 1,200 vehicles and 2,000 staff, with annual revenue in excess of £5m.
Ronald Rogers has been appointed general manager. of Southend Corporation Transport with effect from December 7. Mr. Rogers has been deputy general manager since 1955 and he takes over from W. Baxendale, the present general manager, who is retiring, Maurice Barton, 72, has been appointed chairman and managing director of Barton Transport Ltd., Chilwell. Notts, in succession to his brother, (the late Thomas Barton, CM October 251. Mr. Barton started with the family firm when he was 13. It now has nearly 400 vehicles covering the East Midlands as well as Continental services.
J. T. E. Robinson has been appointed a director of the South Wales Transport Co. Ltd. G. M. Newberry and T. V. Woods, have resigned from the board.
C. A. Hare, currently administrative officer (operations), has been appointed by the British Transport Docks Board as the Port of Southampton's now operations manager. Mr. Hare succeeded W. D. Noddings, recently promoted assistant Chief docks manager.
E. R. L. Fitzpayne, general manager of Glasgow Corporation Transport since 1943, has told the transport committee that he will retire in April when he reaches the age of 65. A past chairman of the Municipal Passenger Transport Association, Mr. Fitzpayne has for some years been leader of the employers' side of the national Joint Industrial Council, Another of his appointments is senior vice-president of the international Union of Public Transport, which has members in America as well as Europe.
Patrick Nlullan, governing director of the transport firm of Mullen Bros. Ltd., Chesterfield, has been granted the Freedom of the City of London in recognition of his donations to charities over a considerable period.
Brian L. Braithwaite, sales director of Scammell Lorries Ltd. since 1955, retired last week after 48 years with the company. During the war, B.L.B.—as he is always known in the company—became a REME LieUt.-,Col. He was closely associated with the development of the original Scammell 8-ton artic.
