Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

by Ashley Taylor • Fresh aspects of bodybuilding and equipment are always to be seen at the Public Works and Municipal Services Exhibition and this year's show, which opens at Olympia on Monday next, November 11, will be no exception. The scope is far wider than is often realized, for those who have not attended are apt to presume that the exhibits will mainly be of a constructional nature. Opening hours for the Exhibition will be from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily, concluding on Saturday, November 16.

A multi-purpose municipal security van is to be shown by Glover, Webb and Liversidge Ltd. (Stand G18/561 Old Kent Road, SE1), this being a conversion of a Commer 1 500 with provision for resisting attack by ammonia. or firearms. The primary purpose of this design is to provide mobile facilities for payment of wages to employees on remote sites, for rent and parking meter collections, and for the transfer of money between council offices and banks. This manufacturer is also to exhibit the bin-lift version of the Musketeer Mark II refuse collector with a specially wide hopper to deal with 1 ',. cu. yd. bins.

Redesigned low loading hoppers will be seen on the Pakamatic collectors from Shelyoke and 'Drewry Ltd. (Strand H15/Letchworth, Herts). One of these, of 40-50 Cu. yd. capacity, will be equipped with Allison fully automatic transmission. On Stand J6, the company will be exhibiting the SD Freightloader container handling unit which has added interest in connection with the implementation of the Civic Amenities Act.

Recently introduced from Finland, and installed by the Salop Trailer Co. Ltd. (Stand W6 /Monkmoor Road, Shrewsbury/ the Multilift demountable body equipment will be seen for the first time. An 8-ton unit will be displayed in conjunction with a 10 cu. yd. refuse container. The load is picked up from the ground by an inclined frame system, loading and unloading being performed hydraulically by one man in a matter of two or three minutes. The equipment incorporates a full 55deg tipping system, enabling the vehicle to be used as an orthodox tipper if required.

On outdoor stand HE14 Arrow Contruction Equipment Ltd. (Drayton House, Gordon Street, London, WC1) will be showing the TSA16 tilting platform trailer, an articulated design that inclines hydraulically to ground level. Loads up to 16 tons can then be driven aboard or winched on.

The ground level Becorit loading system will be demonstrated, by means of 15cwt and 5-ton models actually in operation, by Becorit (Engineering) Ltd. (Stand W22 /Ilkeston, Derbyshire). This method is suitable for trailers, semi-trailers arid rigid vehicles.

Diversity of British Leyland's interests in the municipal and public works field will be made clear by the first public showing of the group's full range since the formation. of the Corporation. The new 134-ton-g.v.w. BMC Laird truck

will be available for inspection on Stand K12-14. This will carry an Eagle Cornpressload 5 refuse collector. Among other exhibits there will be a 250 JU chassis fitted with a Wadham crew cab and an open body carrying a permanently mounted Hydro-vane compressor. Being shown for the first time at this exhibition is a 109-in wheelbase LandRover fitted with an Ebco earth borer operating from a rear p.t-o. It has a depth capacity of 150ft. Amongst the display on D15 will be an AEC Mercury tar tanker.

Appearing for the first time in the UK will be BM-Volvo's new six-wheel DR860 articulated dumper, handled in this country by Anglo-Swedish Equipment Ltd. (Stand L19 /Rayne Road. Braintree, Essex). This is a four-wheel drive unit of 13,1 cu. yd. capacity which is designed to give high tractive power when travelling at top speed on the open road.

The influence of the Civic Amenities Act is evident in the exhibit of the Powell Duffryn Engineering Co. Ltd. (Stand G4 /Cambrian House, Maindy, Cardiff) where there will be a 6S Dumpster for handling refuse containers this is being shown in the livery of Easington RDC. The Leach Packmaster, which will crush such awkward bulky items as furniture and refrigerators will be seen here. This model can handle a wide range of bins but a special feature will be the 1.7 Cu. yd. polyester container that will be shown with this unit.

Under the title of the TV Airwagon the Ford Motor Co, Ltd. (Stand F2 /Brentwood, Essex) will show a new Transit unit that has been converted by Abbey Motors (Hemel Hempstead) Ltd. for transporting compressed air equipment and labour quickly to sites. The Ford D600 120-in, wheelbase chassis will be seen with a 1000gal. gully emptier by the Yorkshire Patent Steam Wagon Co. On Stand H3 the latter company (Hunslet, Leeds, 10.) will be showing a 100gal. gully emptier on a battery electric chassis, this model being particularly suitable for use in such places as multi-storey car parks and shopping precincts. The well-proved Yorkshire suction street sweeper will be available, together with a Yorkshire 500gal. gully emptier on a Karrier Bantam chassis and a Yorkshire 1,000gal gully/cesspool emptier.

Sewer cleansing by means of high pressure jet hose units has lately achieved increasing popularity, over 30 local authorities employing the Johnston system at the time of a recent check. This equipment will be shown by Johnston Bros (Engineering) Ltd. (Stand D12 /Vincent Lane, Dorking, Surrey). The large capacity pump provides pressures up to 1,250 p.s.i. so that pipes of up to 4ft Sin. diameter can be effectively cleansed. In addition the Johnston suction cleaner will be demonstrated. From Lacre Ltd {Stand F20 /Hatfield Road, St Albans, Herts) will come the TG Compact suction sweeper on a Bedford chassis. This design is shorter than earlier models, carries an increased payload, and is easier to manoeuvre.

Two stands, No. HE14A in the heavy equipment section and No. G18 in the National Hall will be occupied by John Gibson and Son Ltd., Bankhead Avenue, Sighthill, Edinburgh 11. On the former will be the Gibson 50 continuous loading collector with crew cab extension. The inside exhibit will include the Gibson trailer model extending tower ladder which is made in extruded alloy section and is mounted on a tricycle chassis. The Gibson container lifting vehicle, which is adapted for raising two different 17; cu yd. capacity bins, will also be seen.

Intended for virtually continuous use in areas considered too abrasive for standard designs the Tennant 90 power sweeper will be specially featured by R. S. Stokvis and Sons Ltd. (Stand EE11/Stokvis House, Central Avenue, West Molesey, Surreyi. The sealed power unit is claimed to have a life 15 times longer than that of the average heavy duty engine. Among the various other items to be shown by Stokvis is the Kelley dockboard system for the transfer of goods betweeen the loading dock and vehicle platform.

In the Shark continuous loading refuse collector, which is being shown by Ronald Perham Ltd. (Stand G1 /88 Clapham Road, London SW9) the throat diameter of the drum has been increased, so giving a faster discharge than was previously possible. The Shark, which has a 50-60 Cu. yd. capacity, is now manufactured by Cammel Laird (Anglesey) Ltd. and is carried on a Seddon municipal chassis.

Sturdiluxe sweeping equipment is being presented by Walker's Mechanical Cleansing Ltd. (Stand 001 /Rockingham Road, Market Harborough, Leics.) and includes the Glutton trailer sweeper-collector in which the tractor hydraulics are used to raise the hopper when discharging the refuse. The now well-established Verro City Mark III suction sweeper will be seen on Stand 045 occupied by Verro Ltd. (Landsdown, Cheltenham, Glos). To cater for long dualand triple-carriageways the Verro County sweeper is being introduced at this exhibition. This model is constructed by mounting the suction sweeper on a standard chassis, the drive being taken from a hydraulic pump in front of the vehicle power unit. The various services are selected through a range of finger-tip electro-hydraulic controls. Two gutterbrushes, one on each side, collect to a central suction nozzle, giving in all a 9ft 8in. sweep, The 6 Cu. yd. refuse hopper is discharged by a dydraulic ram.

Two prototype motorized footpath gritters are to be presented by Atkinsons of Ctitheroe Ltd. (Stand B19 /Kendal Street, Clitheroe, Lanes). These items are due to go into production early in 1969. One is a ridercontrolled gritter which will have alternative equipment for summer use, enabling it to be employed in the form.of street orderly, dumper or gang mower. There will also be a pedestrian-controlled gritter. Among items that will be shown by this manufacturer is the Atkinson motorway spreader on a 6 x 6 chassis with controlled density of spread for the full width of a three-lane motorway.

A wide range of vehicles for municipal service will come from the Rootes organization: Stand F5, occupied by the Dodge division, will include a Model K950 with a Sheppard Meiller demountable container unit. The Karrier stand (F1 4) will consist of three refuse collectors and a combined gully/cesspool emptier. individual units will be shown in the liveries of Edinburgh, Leeds, Burnley and Maidstone Corporations.

Two Eagle municipals will take pride of place in the display of Vauxhall Motors Ltd. {Stand F22 /Luton, Beds.). These will include the Eagle Compressload 5 in which the refuse is discharged by a ram plate without need for tipping of the body. Accompanying the collector will be an 800gal gully/cesspool emptier.

The latest 40-ton dumper will be demonstrated by Fodens Ltd. (Stand C1 /Sandbach, Cheshire). It will be accompanied by a 20-ton model. The larger machine employs the Cummins NH220 power unit, developing 212 bhp at 2100 rpm. The smaller dumper has the Gardner 6LW20, giving 120 bhp at 1700 rpm.

Two 6-wheel 20-ton Guy Big J chassis and a 16-ton four-wheeler, all with mixing equipment, will be displayed on Stand D37 by Guy Motors Ltd, Wolverhampton. In addition the recently introduced V8-engined Big J, which is geared to deal with gradients up to 1-in-31 and to reach a top road speed 45 mph, will be included in the display by Ritemixer Ltd. (Stand B34 /Buckingham Avenue, Trading Estate, Slough, Bucks). The Ritemixer units are designed for mixing concrete from dry in transit or on site and for agitating concrete that has been ready mixed at a central plant.

Users of dumpers and refuse collectors, in particular, will be able to examine in detail hydraulic equipment of the type employed in these units on Stand N13 which is to be occupied by Edbro Ltd. (Quebec Street, B61ton, Lancs).

Apart from the display on the company's own stand, K17, Wickham-Poole Ltd. (Six Hills Works, Six Hills Way, Stevenage, Herts) will be represented on K20, the stand of Mercedes-Benz (GB) Ltd. where additions to the Quick-Hitch and Paliex palletized industrial transport system will be on show for the first time. With them will be featured a Unrmog with a Quick-Hitch coupling, also .a Unimog-Pallex carrier unit in which the carrier frame forms an integral part of the prime mover, so extending the Pallex system to off-road /on-road industrial transport operations.

Kina Engineering Ltd. (Stand CC2 /James Court, Bath Street, Abingdon, Berks) will be showing for the first time the Kina 10A Diesel trolley-mounted high pressure washer which gives a pressure of 1000 psi. and a water output of 4 g.p.m.

Vacu-Lug • Traction Tyres Ltd. (Stand K2 /Gonerby Hill Foot, Grantham, Lines) expect to have developed in time for the show a Tread Pattern Calculator which will take up most of the stand. By depressing one of a number of buttons (the choice depending upon the kind of operating conditions experienced) glass panels will be illuminated to show spectators the appropriate pattern which should be employed.

On show for the first time at this exhibition by Hubert H. P. Trist and Co. Ltd. (Stand N32 /Bath Road, Bristol) will be Top Dog MC15, a new clutch facing specially developed for earth moving equipment and other heavy duties. Ferodo Ltd. (Stand N24 /Chapelen-le-Frith, Stockport) will include sintered metal friction facings for heavy duty uses in a display that will provide for many applications in the public works field.
