ARegarding insurance, the basic require

ment for a commercial vehicle is th:rdparty cover. Premium rates, whether for third party only or for comprehensive cover will depend on many factors. However, comprehensive cover on a 15cwt carrying capacity vehicle on own-account operations in a medium-risk area would approximate to £30 per annum. Actual amount payable would depend on area of location, type of operation, capacity and value of vehicle and individual accident record. Goods in transit cover, while not statutory, is important, as you are generally liable for loss or damage to goods carried in your vehicle.

Road fund taxation of goods vehicles depends entirely on unladen weight. A vehicle weighing approximately 25cwt unladen— carrying capacity 15cwt—would be taxed at approximately £43 per annum.

Under the provisions of the Transport Act 1968, as from November 1, vehicles up to 30cwt unladen are freed from carriers' licensing and can be used for general hire and reward operations. Such vehicles will be subject to annual testing where applicable. and also to Ministry roadside spot checks.
