Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

READER E. C. Mould, of Belvedere, Kent, wins three guineas for the following idea which he recently submitted.

The clutch operating rod on many forward-control vehicles travels across the starter motor and electric leads. The front end on some makes is turned at right angles and connected to the pedal with a split pin. Because this end is almost inaccessible it becomes unnoticed as far as wear is concerned, resulting in fracture and the rod coming into contact with the starter motor connections or leads. Disconnect the adjustable end of the clutch rod and slide polythene tubing over it. This won't stop it breaking but it will prevent an expensive repair, resulting from possible fire.
