SPECIAL TYPES BY SCOTTISH BODYBUILDER

AA WHISKY transporter and a largecapacity tipper, both using aluminium sections and components supplied by the British Aluminium Co. Ltd., have recently been completed by John Gibson and Son Ltd. of Leith.

The whisky transporter is in the form of a detachable box body mounted on a York semi-trailer and uses Snaplock sections which obviate the need for internal framing. The roof and front bulkhead are attached to the side panels by aluminium angle pieces measuring 3 in. by 3 in. by 0-25 in., while the rear end is held rigid by the steel end-framing supporting the aluminium roller shutter door. The body weighs about 15 cwt. and can be removed by means of four special lift stands which enable one person to complete the operation if necessary; the box body itself has no floor and, when carrying bonded goods, is locked to the trailer with high-tensile bolts and Customs padlocks. This semitrailer is operated by the North British Distillery Co. Ltd.

The second body is a 14-ton-capacity tipper built from aluminium hollow plank and floor sections fitted on 4-in, crossbearers fixed to 8-in, steel runners; side pillars are 3-in. by 2-in, aluminium angle pieces. As shown in the picture, a tophinged tailgate is used, the vehicle being operated as a bulk refuse carrier by Edinburgh Corporation lighting and cleansing department.

The body measures 21 ft. long, 8 ft. wide and 4 ft. 6 in. high and is mounted on a Leyland Octopus chassis with twinfront-ram tipping gear.
