Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

-NEVELOPED to provide load capacities .of between 'those of the Warrior fourvheeled models having a gross weight ating of 12 tons and the heavier 14-tonross four-wheelers of the Invincible ange, the new Formidable forwardontrol chassis announced today by Guy 4otors, Ltd., Wolverhampton, have also cen designed for gross loads of 14 tons. "hey have a substantially higher power)-weight ratio than the Warrior.

The model being shown at Kelvin Hail 3 a tractor for Cusick Transport, LW: I is powered by the Meadows 6DC500 ix-eylinclered oil engine of 8.14-litre apacity developing 135 b.h.p. at 2,400 .p.m. and a maximum torque of 346 lb.t, at 1,400 r.p.m. This unit was fitted ) the Guy special export chassis for assenger vehicles (described in The 'ommercial Motor on August 30) for xhibition at the Helsinki Show. It has gross output rating of 150 b.h.p. at ,400 r.p.m.

Four Wheelbasei Although full details of other models t the Formidable range have not been !leased, it is probable that chassis of 2-ft., 14-ft. and 17-ft. wheelbase will be ffered in addition to the tractor chassis. rhich has a wheelbase of 8 ft. 6 in, n overall length of 15 ft. 5+ in. and 'idth of 7 ft. 6 in.

The taxation weight of the chassis ncluding the cab but excluding the York Dupling) is 3 tons 18+ cwt., whilst the verall weight is 4 tons 4 cwt. The 'actor is designed for a gross train load (20 tons. Fuel-tank capacity is 48 gal. Power is transmitted through a hydraucally operated single-dry-plate clutch of 5-in, diameter to a Meadows constant lesh five-speed gearbox (which will be standard feature of all the models) and tence to a spiral-bevel final drive with 6.833 to 1 reduction ratio. The gearDX is a 350C.5 unit with a torque rating f 350 lb.-ft., equipped with the Meadows ;mote gear-change extension incorpor:kg a Hardy-Spicer-jointed shaft.

Tyre equipment comprises 10-in. by )-in. (12-ply) covers at front and rear, ie twin rear wheels being of the 6.00 T. 1-stud type. At the front the track is ft. 24 in. and the track of the rear heels is 5 ft. 8+ in.

Conforming with normal Guy practice, e chassis frame is of all-bolted conruction, and incorporates a detachable ibular cross-member fitted through bell tusings at the rear of the engine. This also a feature of the Rolls-Roycelined bus chassis to be supplied to lhannesburg, of the Helsinki chassis, id the Invincible models equipped with e Meadows 6DC630 10.35-litre power lit. The cross-member provides a means for flexibly mounting the engine at the rear on two Metalastik heavy-duty rubber bushes, with an outside diameter of 51 in. The front mountings are of the Metalastik sandwich pattern located on broad-V axes.

Main channel-section longitudinals of the frame are of 1-in, material and have a uniform depth of 10 in. to the rear of the cab. Additional cross-bearers cornRrise a front member, which braces the tapered longitudinals at their extremities, and two full-depth members, one located amidships and one at the rear. The frame height is 3 ft_ Olt in.

Overslung semi-elliptic springs are mounted under the main .frame members at the front and are outrigged -from the chassis at the rear. The progressive rear springs have helper leaves. Leaf width of the tractor springs is 3 in., whilst other models in the ranee will be fitted with 4-in. springs.

Large Braking Area A generous friction area for braking is afforded by front drums of 154-in. diameter. having a width of 4; -in., and by 7-in.-wide rear drums of I51-in. diameter. Servo action is provided by a BendixWestinghouse air-pressure system, which operates Girling wedge-type shoe mechanisms by means of diaphragms at the front

and air cylinders at the rear.

A Marks cam-and-double-roller steering system is employed, an unusual feature of the steering-box arrangement being reversal of the operating shaft to give a drop-arm position on the inside. This obviates restriction of arm move ment.

Invincible models produced in the pasi three months have been equipped with Bowyer full-vision cabs of light-alloy and plastics construction, which have afforded a weight saving of about 2 cwt. A similar cab with four-point flexible mounting' will be a standard feature of all Formidable chassis. The radiator grille is a plastics moulding with aluminium-lead surrounds with plastics inserts, and is formed of horizontal louvres in a pattern similar to that of the Warrior grille.

Before acceptance for the Invincible chassis, the cab was fully tested on the corrugated section at the Motor Industry Research Association's proving ground.

The main cab frame is of light-alloy construction with Pop-riveted panels, and the double-skinned roof is of plastics reinforced with moulded ribs. A wrapround windscreen gives good vision.

Good Rear Vision

Three windows extending the full width of the cab arc provided behind the driver.

The mounting of the cab is such that the distance between the centre line of the front axle and thc rear panel is 1 ft. 6 in., which, it is claimed, is about 6 in. less than the average.

A Smith's heater is standard equipment, air being drawn through an inlet on the off side in the front panel below the windscreen, on the opposite side to the engine air intake. This is connected to a Gardner oil-bath air cleaner mounted inside the cab. The duct between the cleaner and the engine manifold comprises two plastics pipes joined by flexible rubber hose. A plastics engine cover will probably be fitted to all the mOdels in the range.

Other cab features include a Chapman fully adjustable driver's seat, air-operated twin windscreen wipers and air-operated windscreen washers, which are common to all the larger Guy models. A 24-volt lighting and starting system is employed.

The stand number of Guy Motors, Ltd., at the Scottish Motor Exhibition is 123.
