C1VIC heads of Oldham and Royton extended a warm welcome to the industry, last week, at the official opening of the new Woodstock factory of Foster and Seddon, Ltd. The ceremony was attended by distributors from all over the country and parties of visitors inspected the extensive plant. Oldham had an engineering tradition fostered by generations of craftsmen, said Mr. Robert Seddon. The presence of skilled engineers was one of the factors in the company's choice of these premises. Oldham Corporation had placed an order for the first vehicle to be completed in the new factory. The home market was crying for motor vehicles, but the company had to send a large .part of the output abroad. Alderman Stirling J. Marron, Mayor of Oldham, who performed the opening ceremony, referred to the good reports he had received from operators of Seddons during a visit to Denmark. That the motor industry should have to take fourth place in steel priority was deplored by Mr. Herbert Seddon. who emphasized the fact that unless the position improved, the industry would be severely handicapped. He recalled how the first Seddon took shape in 1937 and traced the vehicle's subsequent progress. The company's products were going all over the world and the new plant had been set up so that, in addition to meeting home demands, it could cater for the export markets.
