Trailer with Welded Framing, Highly Ingenious Overrun Brake Capable of Being Applied Independently

Stand 135

WELDING, in the construction of W chassis, has received much consideration from designers during the past few years, and a splendid example of its employment in trailer building is afforded by the P.E.C.

The frame, however, is nat the only point of interest in this exhibit, for the vehicle has a noVelbraking system.

Of 6-7-ton capacity, the P.E.C. trailer has a platform 10 ft. long and 7 ft. 5 ins. wide.

Visitors will observe that the drawbar, the arms of which form two sides of a triangle, is attached at its rear ends to a rocking yoke mounted, on a horizontal axis, across the frame. The. lower portion of this yoke is attached by suitable coupling to the brakeoperating arm, forward action of which expands the brake shoes.

It will thus be understood that, under towing loads, the brakes are in the oil position, whilst so soon as the trailer tends to overrun the tractive unit the tendency is for the yoke to rock, its base moving in a forward direction and applying the brakes.

The apparatus, in Addition, incorporates a shock absorber which controls the motion of the swinging gear and ensures gradual application and release of the brakes. There is also an emergency lever which enables the brakes to be applied and held on, independently of tile movement of the draw-bar. This device would come into action in the event of the draw-bar becoming accidentally disconnected.

For reversing this trailer without bringing into operation the overrunning brake, a catch is provided which temporarily holds the brake off,— Projectile and Engineering Co., Ltd., New Road, London, S.W.8.
