examination in ' mechanics' work is The Motor Vehicle Mechanics' Textbook," by F. K. Sully. The second edition has been published by Temple Press Limited, Bowling Green Lane, London, E.C.1, at 12s. 6d. plus lid, by post.

The text is in two parts: the first deals with calculations., science and drawing, and the second with technology. The first part leads from simple mensuration and geometry to the characteristics of metals, whilst the second describes the operation and maintenance of the various component systems of a vehicle.

This is a book which transport managers may not only commend to their maintenance staff but also benefit from themselves.

Keeping Brightness

COMPARATIVELY expensive at 12s. 6d. per 8 oz. tin, Topcoat bodywork polish nevertheless appeared to represent good value to a member of the staff of The Commercial Motor who tested it on his car in comparison with a high-quality wax. Made by Romac Industries, Ltd., The Hyde, London, N.W.9, Topcoat is described as a polythene-strengthened polish with an ingredient to shield the paint from the dulling effect of ultra-violet light.

The paintwork of the car concerned was first brightened with a liquid cleanser and Topcoat was applied to some parts and wax to others. After a month's use, during which the vehicle was washed twice, the efficacy of the ingredient in Topcoat was apparent in that the underlying finish was notably more brightly preserved than where the wax had been used.

Long Winker THE Raydyot BL 6 is a winking-light indicator for commercial vehicles produced by James Neale and Sons, Ltd., Graham Street, Birmingham, 1. Measuring 10 in. long, 2-,1 in. wide, and having a protrusion of 2+ in., it has a ribbed amber lens and sells, with bulb, at £1 17s. 6d. The base plate and bulb platform arc chromium plated.

£8 8s. Drill PRICED at £8 8s., an electric drill with

a chuck has been introduced by S. N. Bridges and Co., Ltd., York Road, London, S.W.11. Spindle speeds are 1,600 r.p.m. under full load and 3,250 running light. The tool is known as the DR5S Mark IV Neonic.

Defrosting Wiper

TAKING the form of a sheath I incorporating two heater elements, an accessory for defrosting windscreens has been developed by Jenbro Products, 43 Plough Road, London, S.W.11. It B24 costs 11 2s. 6d. retail and consumes 2 amp. There is a slot in the centre of the sheath allowing it to be fitted so that the elements are on each side of and parallel with the wiper blade, with which the unit moves.

Adjustable Bank THE tailboard loader made for vehicles by the Burtonwood Engineering Co., Ltd., North East Industrial Road, Welwyn Garden City, Hcrts, is now offered as an independent wheeled unit known as the electro-hydraulic adjustable loading bank. Operating on three-phase

current, it can elevate 1 ton to 5 ft. and has a platform measuring 7 ft., by 3 ft.

The standard model costs £280 and other types can be made to specification. The company also make a wheeled 2-ton gantry at £375. This lifts loads to 10 ft.

Wide Scope rAA REFERENCE book of wide scope is "Motor Specifications and Prices," the 1959 edition of which has been published by Stone and Cox, Ltd., 44 Fleet Street, London, E.C.4, at £1 10s. plus ls. 3d. by post. There are tables of brief specifications of private cars, commercial vehicles including battery-electrics, motorcycles, mo-ped power units and farm tractors.

The specifications cover not only vehicles in current production but also those which appeared and disappeared within recent years. Similarly, the vehicles produced by existing companies are des&ibed as from about 20 years ago, where appropriate, until the present. Prices are given in the instances where they are obtainable. This is probably the most valuable feature of the book for many transport operators. There are over 850 pages.

Clean Hands SL1GHTLY pine-scented and having a creamier consistency than the product formerly bearing the name, Rozalex industrial hand cleanser is b'eing marketed by Rozalex, Ltd., 10 Norfolk Street, Manchester, 2, in 7-1b., 14-1b. and 56-lb. tins. A sample tested by The Commercial Motor was found to be easy to apply and quickly effective. It is stated that it will clean glass and similar fibres from the skin as well as abrasives, adhesives, resins and dyes. After application to the hands; Rozalex was washed off equally well by either hot or cold water.

Starting Nuts ATOOL to enable nuts to be started on screws in awkward places is the latest Apkovvay product of J. W. Pickavant and Co., Ltd., Birmingham, I. It comprises a small plate with a + in. or + in. square drive socket, and there is a semi-rigid holder rod to manceuvre the tool into the required position. The socket is turned by rotation of a flexible cable of equal length to the rod.

THE Automobile Association are dis tributing the 1959-60 edition of their "Handbook for Ireland." Some 500 garages • are listed and there are eight pages of road maps. Legal summaries are given for both Ulster and Eire.
