Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

FOR many classes of work the tipping wagon has proved of value, but, until now, its loads: have , been restricted to 5-6 tons. Now, however, in the latest production from the works of Seamrciell Lorries, Ltd., there is a remarkable jump to 12 tons in the load-carryirig capacity of a tipping wagon, and this in a body which can be tipped either tb the rear ' or to the sides.

The actual vehicle illustrated is the first. of a fleet of six built to the order of Southern Roadways, Ltd., . of Poole. Its overall length is between 26 ft. and

as the vertical stanchions projeet above the body, and can, if necessary, be filled-in without altering the "sides and tailboard. These are arranged to pivot from the top, and are normally prevented from swinging outwards by the provision of spring-held catches. When the body is tipped, these catches are tapped • down one at a time, and so let either •side or tailboard swing out as required. Each catch is pivoted 'at' its centre, and between its inner end and the bottom of the -body is a spiral spring.

In the particular vehicle which we illustrate, the tipping gear employed is the well-known Brornilow and Edwards type. This consists of two hydraulic rams, arranged to pivot either to

the side or rear, and, of course, designed especially for the total load to which they are subjected. This type of tipping, wagon can be built with a body space of a length up to 15 ft. 6 ins.", a width of 7 ft., and sides -3 ft. 6 ins. high. In addition, there is a bow front. The capacity or such a' body, when loaded flush with the top, is approximately 15 cub. yds., thus providing ample space to accommodate 12 tons of practically any class of building or road-making material.

The motive unit consists of •a 47 h.p. standard short-wheelbase tractor, • and the carrier, or trailer, is interchangeable with• others.

This machine has been exhaustively tested with a, full 12-ton load, and it was found that it was possible to give a 5O degree side tip in one minute and a 50-degree end tip in 1 min. 30 secs.

The ability of a machine of this type to deal expeditiously With such huge quantities of material, will render it of great value to those whose work involves the transport of loads which are suitecMo a Vehicle of large capacity.
