• Hunter Distribution is withdrawing from retail contract distribution to concentrate on produce and food manufacturing operations.
Two depots have already been closed down and Hunter's Northfleet site has been bought by the Tibbett & Britten Group, along with a major Sainsbury's contract, for 24.5 million.
The depot serves 27 Sainsbury's stores in South East England and will join T&B subsidiary Lowfield Distribution, which already has a contract with the supermarket giant in the North West.
Commenting on the proposed purchase, TBG chairman John Harvey says the acquisition is "another milestone in our policy of strategic diversification in the distribution sector". Grocery distribution now accounts for more than a third of THG's business. It will retain all Northfleet's 130 staff.
