Production switch
• Production of Cornet and F1700 trucks has been switched to the main Leyland Daf plant at Leyland. The company plans to produce 800 left-hand-drive F1700s each year — all for export.
Towing mirror
• All drawbar trailers made by Ray Smith Demountables are now fitted with a large mirror on the towing bar. The aim is to help drivers judge the angle of the drawbar and steering axle when nosing the trailer, with the drawbar connected, to the front of the truck.
Slight increase
I Truck production at Daimler-Benz increased slightly to 261,000 vehicles last year, boosting the parent company's turnover by 4.2% to £26.96 billion.
The company has just acquired a majority stake in Mexican truck manufacturer Fabrica Autotransportes Mexicana (FAMSA). • Bedford has introduced a new Isuzu 2.5 litre directinjection diesel engine to its 13rava range, it is one of the first Japanese DI diesel engines to be offered in a light commercial vehicle in the UK.
As predicted in Commercial Motor, (1-7 February) the new Isuzu engine replaces the 2.2lit unit which produced only 39kW (53hp). The newcomer boosts this by 43% to 55Kw (74hp). Bedford expects it to account for 80% of Brava sales.
Maximum torque of 160Nm (118 lb ft) is achieved at 2,200rpm, and the compression ratio of the new engine is 18.4:1. Isuzu has chosen a Bosch VE injection pump and fuel distributor, complete with enrichment device to improve cold starting.
Bedford says the new engine is now available at no extra cost on both 4x2 and 4x4 Brava pickups. Carrying capacities are now 1060kg for the 4x2, and 870kg for the 4x4.
