Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

stage the company felt that a splitter gearbox was easier to use, thus reducing the risk of driver error. In effect, it is a move towards the splitter concept away from the range-change rather than a Fuller versus Spicer argument.

Although the Spicer is unfamiliar to Leyland operators, it has been used for some time on the Bedford TM3800 chassis with both Detroit Diesel V8 and Cummins E290 engines. Where the Roadtrain application differs, however, is in the use of a pre-select arrangement. This has been incorporated in a separate box on top of the Spicer casing.

The clutch is the Dana Spicer 355mm (14in) diameter twin dry plate type with automatic adjustment as specified on the Marathon.

In the braking department, Leyland has opted for Girling 'Twin-Stop wedge brakes which offer twin leading shoe braking in both forward and reverse directions. According to Leyland, the twin-wedge system does not need the same air capacity as the S-Cam so the total system — including the reservoirs, for example — can be made smaller.

The pipework arrangement allows Roadtrain to be coupled to either two or three-line trailers by juggling the Susies. The chassis is fitted with the standard yellow (service), red (emergency) and blue (secondary) Susies with the fourth connection not being required for three-line coupling.

When coupling to a two-line trailer, the blue Susie is simply coupled to this fourth connection to provide full trailer braking on both service and secondary systems.
