HESTAIR DENNIS managing director John Smith has been sentenced to life imprisonment in Iraq, and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office does not know where he is being held.
Mr Smith, who was held without trial from July 1979, was found guilty last week on charges of having bribed four Iraqis, all of whom were sentenced to death. His property has also been confiscated.
A Foreign and Commonwealth Office spokesman told CM this week that it is awaiting a full report from its staff in Baghdad, and that it will discuss the matter with Mrs Smith and Hestair Dennis before taking further action.
There is no formal appeals procedure, but Mrs Smith may be able to ask for clemency from the president on a personal basis.
British Consul officials have been unable to see Mr Smith, and did not know in which prison he was being held this week. They saw him in July, and December last year, and again on February 20, •
