LONDON TRANSPORT'S pool of one-man-operated buses will be reduced further this year when 118 secondhand AEC Routemaster double-deckers are overhauled for passenger service.
Forty 65-seat ex-London Country Green Line coaches are to be rebuilt with open platforms and will appear on central area routes, probably from LT's Walworth Garage in south-east London.
Sixty-six former London Country 72-seat RML-type Routemasters are already being overhauled, and will he used in place of Daimler Fleetlines from midsummer.
And 12 former Northern General forward-entrance Routemasters bought recently are to be used on stage service, despite their having platform doors.
An LT spokesman was unable to tell CM how much money has been allocated for the overhaul programme, saying that final Greater London Council approval is still awaited.
But £2.8m has been allocated for the purchase and rehabilitation of 285 secondhand Routemasters. Many of these have been used for driver training, so the psv examples are costing LT over £10,000 each tp buy and put on the road.
LT plans also to convert 69 one-man operated Fleetlines into training buses so that more Routemasters can be released for passenger service.
