IN operation by the National Coal Board for over a year
at Dillwyn Colliery, near Seven Sisters, Glamorgan, an A.E.C. six-wheeled dump truck has been moving 260 tons of slag each normal working day. Loads average 14 tons over a half-mile haul. Equipped with a Telehoist steel body and tipping gear, the vehicle is a Mammoth Major Mark III of 11-ft. 8+-in.-wheelbase and has an 11.3-litre 150 b.h.p.
oil engine. •
Tipping to a maximum of 70° is effected by a Telelever 14.D.L.7 unit incorporating twin double-acting rams and stabilizing links which protect the rams from lateral stress. Tipping occupies 12 seconds, power being supplied by a Telehoist combined power take-off and pump, whilst lowering takes 10 seconds.
All controls are located inside the cab and the hydraulic circuit is Such that the body may be raised, lowered or held in any desired position. Constructed from *-in. steel plate throughout, the scow-ended body has a 2-in, timber sandwich floor to withstand the heavy impacts of chute loading, and a cab guard.
For levelling off the tip, a Bamford and Evershecl scraper blade, operated by a standard Telehoist ram, is fitted to the front of the vehicle,
