THE claim of the Western S.M.T. Co.. Ltd., to provide the major share of the bus service when trams are withdrawn in Paisley was criticized by two operators before the Scottish Traffic Commissioners, last week.

The operators were Graham's Bus Services, Ltd., Hawkhead, who are applying for a service between Paisley and Hillington, and MeGili's Bus Service, Ltd., Barrhead. who want to run through Paisley.

Mr. C. H. Johnstone, for Graham's and 1V1cGill's, said it wciuld be a retrograde step if licences were not granted to his clients. Competition was needed to provide the best service to the public.

For Western S.M.T., Mr. J. B. T. Loudon said an operator should suffer the imposition of a newcomer only when he failed to fulfil his responsibility for working a route.

Mr. W. F. Quin, chairman, said it would take some time for the Commissioners to reach a decision.

OFFICIAL ASSURANCE ON FUEL

STEPS have been taken to ensure that businesses are able to carry on at a reasonable level and that no one's livelihood should be threatened by fuel shortage, Mr. R. H. Nugent, Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Transport, has assured Sir James Henderson, M.P. for East Fife.

Sir James had taken up with Mr. Nugent matters raised by Mr. Robert Stewart, secretary of the Fife Sub-area ot the Road Haulage Association, who said that the distribution of fuel seemed to have been haphazard. Amounts of fuel made available were far below what public and industry had been led to expect. Large-scale unemployment and redundancy seemed inevitable unless something were done quickly, said Mr. Stewart.

LATEST ON FUEL SITUATION "THE annual meeting of the Reading

and District Area of the Traders' Road Transport Association will be held at the Caversham Bridge Hotel, Reading, on March 11, at 7 p.m. Mr. R. E. G. Brown, secretary of the London and Home Counties Division, will speak about the current fuel situation and deal with various other matters, including local authorities' new powers to make traffic restrictions.

WIDER GAPS FOR ECONOMY I F carburetters are set to give weaker

mixtures, sparking-plug gaps should be widened to give a longer spark to fire a weak mixture. This advice has been given by the K.L.G. company, who suggest the widening of the standard gap by 0.005-0.010 in.

Coils should be in good condition, and if gaps arc widened plugs should be checked more often than normally because less margin is left for electrode erosion.
