• An Italian week-end and public holiday ban on HGVs im posed after pressure from a consumer association, has been relaxed because of its high cost to consumers.
The ban was introduced in 1986 after a series of accidents involving trucks. Perishable foods were exempt in the early stages, but these too came under embargo following consumer pressure.
The ban was withdrawn from perishable freight on 4 June, following a successful appeal to the Government by associations representing the road haulage industry and food manufacturers.
The consumer association, Codacons, says lifting the ban will undo all the good done by the recent introduction of safety measures like seat belts in cars, breath tests and lower speed limits, because more trucks will be allowed on the roads at weekends just as the holiday season starts.
But Road hauliers welcomed the decision; "Prices just could not have kept going up as they did," said one haulier. "In the end the consumer was being hit very hard in the pocket." 0 The West German authorities have also abolished a weekend ban on HGVs carrying perishable foodstuffs.
