Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Derbyshire-based iron producer Stanton has contractedout its transport operation.

Contracts have been awarded to six local hauliers, with most of the work going to John Dee and William West and Sons of Ilkeston.

Stanton, which was bought by Saint-Gobain from British Steel in 1985, commissioned a survey into its transport operations during 1988.

This found more than half the company's heavy haulage work was already undertaken by outside contractors and recommended that the entire operation should be passed on to external operators.

Stanton says: "Given we need to maintain a high level of customer service and that the transport fleet needed replacing, we decided to transfer the

operation to external companies." Of the 17 employees affected by the move five have been transferred to other Stanton depots, four have taken early retirement and the rest have taken jobs with the outside hauliers.

The fleet of 14 tractors and 27 York trailers will be auctioned later this month, with three vehicles being retained for light deliveries between its UK sites.

Stanton is the UK's biggest manufacturer of water pipe systems, employing 2,500 staff at three depots.
