Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

0 New ideas in public cleansing

THE disposal of domestic and industrial waste will be the main theme of an exhibition and conference — Avfall '73 — to be held at IOnkoping, Sweden, from August 27 until September 1. The event will be supported by the National Commission for Environmental Protection, the Ministry for Social Affairs and the Federation of Swedish Industries and will include a number of foreign exhibitors.

The growing awareness of the problems caused by discarded packaging has led to the introduction in at least one Dutch city of a novel collection service for empty bottles. A Bedford-based vehicle, operated on contract to the Rotterdam public cleansing department, is fitted with a Geesink refuse body and calls regularly at restaurants and supermarkets. The waste glass recovered is subsequently used as cuilet in manufacture.

A Bedford chassis also figures in another municipal experiment — now in progress in Switzerland. Inability to replace old battery-electrics by a domestic product — even the post office, one of the largest Swiss users of electric vehicles is now converting to petrol-engined vehicles — inspired the Basle public works engineer to convert a Bedford street washer to electric operation. Noise reduction is the prime consideration in the introduction of what is believed to be the only Bedford electric in use so far.

Road transport expands in Poland

POLAND'S road transport organization expects this year to carry an even greater proportion of domestic and international freight than the 1972 figure of 500m tons; already almost 70 per cent of goods transport in Poland is by road.

By 1985, 1000 miles of new motorways will be opened in addition to the reconstruction or improvement of over 6000 miles of trunk roads, and Poland is buying machinery and plant from the West.

The Polish motor industry has standardized on three main types of medium and heavy commercials, the Jelcz 315 for a gvw of 8 tons, the 316 for 10 tons solo but widely used for drawbar trailer work, and the Jelcz 317 artic, all powered by Leyland licence engines. Practically all international operations, however, are carried out with vehicles from French or Swedish makers. Volvo, for instance, is now supplying 125 additional F89 tractors to PEKAES, the major Polish state haulage operating unit.

0 Big pick-up from Germany

THE principle of ground-level loading for heavy concrete building sections and panels has been applied to a novel semi-trailer introduced this month by Iagel-Kamag GmbH, of Ulm, Germany. The design allows the payload of up to 22 tons, standing on an auxiliary subframe, to be lifted from the ground into the travelling position without the need for a crane or other handling gear.

Within the legal overall length of 15m, the articulated vehicle provides a useful boat length of 8.5m (27ft 10in.) and an inside clear width between the side members o 1.6m (5ft 3in.). For loading, the open-endec semi-trailer is backed on to the "palletized' load so that lifting lugs can engage on the underside of the payload.

The vertical lift movement of the frame i2 effected by means of the hydraulic ram! which also fulfil the function of the suspension system for each of the six wheels The low-loading vehicle, which can carr3 precast panels up to 3.6m (1111 94in.)shigh can also be adapted for the transport o: steel coils, heavy pipe work or sheet glass.

0 Volvo has France taped

SINCE the introduction in 1971 of Volvo F 89s in France each vehicle sold there ha! been supplied with a built-in radio, tape player and a "familiarization tape" tc enable the driver to get the best out of hi! unit. The immense value derived from r refresher session, which the driver can lister to while on the road without having to give up any of his time, is in keeping with Volvo's back up tradition.

o DAF diversifies

SALES of cv in Holland are recovering but overall in 1972 heavy truck sales fell by 21 per cent reinforcing the view that further co-operation agreements and diversification are essential. Negotiations by OAF with the Dutch railways may result in the manufacture of rolling stock components by this maker. Another possibility to expand production may arise from the assembly oi earth-moving plant designed by International Harvester.

In a separate programme, DAF ha established a new research and development group to study novel methods of transporl in cities, such as "people movers". Initia contacts with Krauss-Maffei of Germany indicate Dutch interest in that maker' Transrapid and Transurban systems while simultaneous approaches to the Dutch government are now exploring the possibility of State aid for the research phase.
