• The European Parliament in Strasbourg on Tuesday steered around the problem of the 40-tonners and left it for the EEC Transport Ministers to discuss at their scheduled meeting later this month, when Britain, Eire and Denmark are expected to reiterate their opposition.
Signor Carlo Scarascia-Mugnozza, while reviewing proposals for an EEC transport policy never mentioned lorry weights. But he was forthright when stressing glaring differences of policy in member countries; "flagrant disparities" in the taxation of utility vehicles; and widely different fuel prices. And he called for more road safety, pointing out that 60,000 died and I.65m people were injured on Common Market roads every year.
