BY the extensive use of plastics for the cab and light alloy for the body, A. C. Penman, Ltd., Queensberry Motor Works, Dumfries, have enabled a B.M.C. lorry legally to carry 7 tons at 30 m.p.h. The chassis, with the maker's own cab but no body, weighs 2 tons 17 cwt. 31 qr. The new vehicle, complete, weighs only 2 tons 19 cwt. 2 qr.

The cab has an alloy underframe on flexible mountings, and a lightweight triangulated framework in hardwood. The joints are resin-glued and well gusseted, and the laminated wheelarches are also resin-glued. The exterior is sheathed in woven glass-fibre plastics, bonded to and reinforcing the wooden framing. The back is panelled in plywood.

A full-vision windscreen is carried round the front corners in Perspex. The windscreen and the rear window are of toughened Triplex and mounted in Clatonrite. Triplex is used also for the balanced drop windows in the doors, which have Young's fittings.

The two bucket seats have spring cushions and are trimmed in leathercloth.

The platform body is framed on the cantilever system to give maximum strength with minimum weight. It is 16 ft. 6 in. long and 7 ft. 3/ in. wide, with a 2-ft. headboard and 11-in. side raves.

It is built throughout in I.C.I. Kynal heat-treated aluminium alloy, fastened with either Kynal cold-squeeze rivets or cadmium-plated bolts. The angle underframe is strutted directly to the floor and raves. The floor is in extruded 9-in. sections and the tailboard is in angle material on alloy hinges. The headboard is framed with double angles and planked with corrugated sections.

Holding-down bolts are fitted to each unit of the underframe, and alloy roping hooks are attached to the cantilevers and headboard. The body sells for £200 and the cab for £245. Alloy rear wings can be fitted for £11 10s. in place of those supplied with the chassis.

The cab is painted inside in cream and tan enamel, with garnish rails and finishers in varnished mahogany.
