FROM June 12-15, the people of Eastbourne will be forcibly reminded of their municipal cleansing service, as this period covers the 58th annual conference of the Institute of Public Cleansing, which, this year, is being held at this popular

south-coast resort. .

At Gildredge Park, on Wednesday, the latest types of refuse collector, cesspool and gully-emptier, snow plough and so on will be paraded and, where possible, demonstrated. Among the extensive range of equipment to be displayed will be models to meet every municipal purpose, and to suit the exacting needs of city cleansing departments or the more modest requirements ot the smallest rural district.

Included in the new machines will be the Bedford 3-tonner powered by a Perkins P4 oil engine. It will be seen as a 7-cu.-yd. side-loading refuse collector with Eagle body. Another interesting vehicle will be the Dennis 22-cu.-yd. rear-loading Paxit Major II, which is a larger version of the popular Paxit II.

An unusual feature of an I8-cu.-yd. refuse collector for use in Canada, to D10 be shown by Glover, Webb and Liversidge, Ltd., is its adaptability for snow clearance and other emergency purposes.

The smallest gully-emptier to be shown will be the Phcenix, its capacity being 55 gal. This machine has been designed for use in small back streets and alleys and is only 3 ft. 4 in. wide. Its Wrigley 3 h.p. truck chassis gives it a high degree of manceuvrability. The machine is self-contained, being complete with rotary exhauster, suction hose and stand pipe.

A pedestrian-controlled snow plough will be exhibited by the Rolba Co., Ltd., 14 Evans Avenue, Allestree Park, Derby. This appliance is made in a number of sizes, the model to be shown being fitted with a Volkswagen industrial petrol engine of 28 b.h.p. Its average snow-clearing capacity is 120 tons an hour, with a clearing width of 3 ft. 3 in. to a depth of 3-5 ft. It operates on the rotary principle and can eject to a distance of 80 ft.

Five machines will be shown by Shelvoke and Drewry, Ltd., Letchworth, Herts. These will include an S.D. 16-18-cu.-yd. fore-and-aft-tipping refuse collector and a fore-and-aft-tipping container bulk loader. These machines, like the Chelsea 11.3-cu.-yd. refuse collector also to be shown, have a cab to accommodate six loaders in addition to the driver.

The remaining two machines will be a 1,100-gal, cesspool-emptier, with Reavell rolling-drum exhauster, and an 800-gal, gully and cesspool-emptier, equipped for high-pressure street washing. A four-speed gearbox with overdrive fifth speed is now standard on all S.D. municipal cleansing vehicles.

Walkers and County Cars, Ltd.. Fleet, Hants, will feature their Paladin refuse collector with Eagle Compressmore body. This machine was designed ta deal with large storage containers as used in blocks of flats and large build ings. It can also handle household dustbins.

In addition to the Bedford 3-tohner with P4 oil engine, Vauxhall Motors, Ltd., Luton, will have a 750-800-gal. gully and cesspool-emptier mounted on a Bedford 5-ton petrol-engined chassis, a 12-20-cu.-yd. Compressmore refuse collector based on a similar chassis and a 1,200-gal. sewer-flushing and sprinkling outfit, the basis of which will be a Bedford 7-ton oil-engined chassis. All

the bodies on these Bedford vehicles will be by the Eagle Engineering Co., Ltd., Warwick.

The Eagle concern will be represented by 14 vehicles, of which six will form the company's entry. They will have five refuse collectors varying from a 7-cu.-yd. machine with Seddon 3,ton oil-engined chassis, to two Compressmore 12-20-cu.-yd. vehicles, one with a Bedford 5-ton chassis and the other an Austin 5-ton chassis. The sixth exhibit will be an Eagle 800-gal, gully and cesspool-emptier with rotary exhauster. It will be seen on a Bedford 5-ton standard chassis.

For carrying pig swill or for salvage work, the Thames 2-cu.-yd. machine, based op the 10-cwt. chassis, is valuable. It will form one of the three machines to be shown by the Ford Motor Co, Ltd., Dagenham. The other two will be a Thames 7-cu.-yd. side-loading refuse collector on a 3-ton chassis and a 750-800-gal, gully and cesspoolemptier on a 5-ton chassis.

Combining hydraulic compression of the load with a simple form of tipping.the Gibson Pendulum refuse collector, to be demonstrated by John Gibson and Son, Ltd., Jameson Place, Leith, Edinburgh, 6, will commend itself by reason of its lack of complicated mechanism. Bodies are available from 13-cu.-yd. capacity to 20 cu. yd. and

they can be fitted to most makes of standard chassis.

Glover, Webb and Liversidge, Ltd., 561 Old Kent Road, London, S.E.I, will again be showing one of the largest refuse carriers at present available. It is the Transport 40-cu.-yd. machine and will be seen with a Foden F.G.6/I5 chassis. A heavy-duty 'version of the Transport all-steel moving floor provides for rapid discharge.

This company will also have on view their Lodek 14-cu.-yd. side-loading refuse collector, a 15-cwt. low-loading salvage trailer, and the 18-cu.-yd. sideloader referred to earlier.

Five of the exhibits of Karrier Motors, Ltd., Luton, will be refuse collectors, the sixth being a KarrierYorkshire 800-gal. gully-emptier. The engine fitted in the Gamecock Derbytype 14-cu.-yd. refuse collector to be shown is the Rootes 105 b.h.p. oil unit derated to 75 b.h.p. in the Loadmaster 20-25-cu.-yd. collector, another exhibit. the 105 b.h.p, version is used. The only Karrier Bantam vehicle will be exhibited as a 7-cu.-yd. side-loading collector. It has a 53.56 b.h.p. overheadvalve petrol engine. The maker's 91-b.h.p. underfloor petrol engine is employed in two other Gamecock chassis, one of which will be fitted with a 12-cu.-yd. collector body and the other will be shown as an 18-cu.-yd. dual-tip collector.

Scarnmell Lorries, Ltd., Watford, Herts, will be represented by two Scarab 3-ton mechanical horses, one drawing a 9-cu.-yd. 'side-loading collector and the other a 12-cu.-yd. barrier-loading machine. Both are articulated outfits, the semi-trailers being fitted with the Scammell retractable undercarriage.

An 18-cu.-yd. self-loading and selfpacking refuse collector and an Ideal 13-cu.-yd. rotating, gravity-packing machine will be the two vehicles to be demonstrated by Shefflex, Ltd., Rutland Street, Sheffield, 3. The 18-cu.-yd.

vehicle is notable for its method of loading, as the mouth of the refuse bin is sealed under pressure in close contact with a shutter, thus preventing spillage of the refuse.

The Ideal refuse collector has a body which can be partially rotated to pack the refuse. It is to be shown mounted on a Dennis Pax chassis.

A feature of the Yorkshire Utliversal 800-gal. gully-emptying equipment is that it can be mounted on any suitable chassis. It has its own engine, automatic clutch and Yorkshire watercooled vacuum pump. An example will be displayed by the Yorkshire Patent Steam Wagon Co., Hunslet, Leeds, 10, on a Karrier Gamecock chassis.

A Sweeper-collector

A second Karrier-Yorkshire combination will be in the form of a sweepercollector. The sweeper can be set to either 3 ft. 6 in. or 6 ft. The capacity of the water tank is 200 gal. and that of the body 3 cu. yd.

An 800-gal. gully-emptier on an Albion Claymore chassis and a 1,200 gal. cesspool-emptier based on a Karrier underfloor-engined 7-ton chassis, are also to be exhibited. The Yorkshire concern may also be showing a new type of industrial sweeper.

In addition to the larger version of the Paxit II, which forms one of the vehicles to be shown by Dennis Bros., Ltd., Guildford, they will have for demonstration three other refuse collectors, a short-wheelbase tipper and an 800-gal. gully-emptier. The gullyemptier was one of the first to be fitted with deodorizing equipment.

One of the refuse collectors will have a side-loading body of 7-8-cu.-yd. capacity mounted on a short-wheelbase oil-engined chassis providing a high degree of manoeuvrability.

In the battery-electric field there will be two examples of the Manulectric pedestrian-controlled street orderly which are to be shown by Messrs Sidney Hole's Electric Vehicles, Withdean Works, London Road, Withdcan, Brighton, 6.

Model 4 has an aluminium body designed to hold 12 bins each of ;31-cu.-ft. capacity. The other machine, also a Model 4, will have a 2-cu.-yd. hydraulic end-tipping body. The operating range of these vehicles fully loaded is 10-12 miles.

Johnston Bros. (Contractors), Ltd., Ibex House, Minories, London, E.C.3, will give a demonstration of the ease of mounting and removing their City snowplough on a lorry. They will also have for inspection a V-blade snowplough for mounting on a tractor and a two-wheeled slush remover for attaching to any suitable tractive unit.

This year's vehicle demonstrations will be notable for the number and variety of the earth-moving equipment. Saville (Tractors), lid., Staines Road, Feltham, Middx, will have a bullgrader. a skid shovel and a scraper, all of a heavy-duty type.

A Bristol Tipmaster and a Conder l--cu-yd, scraper will be featured by H. A. Saunders, Ltd., 836-842 High Road, North Finchley, London, N.12. The special purpose of the Tipmaster is for consolidating refuse at tipping sites, whilst the scraper can be used to excavate a site to increase tip capacity.

Loaders and Shovels

Mackay Industrial Equipment, Ltd., Faggs Road, Feltham, Middx, will also be showing a Conder scraper coupled to a Fiat industrial tractor. A two-way loader based on a Fordson Major oilengined industrial tractor, and a loading shovel with an output of from 120150 tons an hour, will form two other Mackay exhibits.

Two new loading shovels are to be demonstrated by W. E. Bray and Co., Ltd., Fag,gs Road, Feltham, Middx. These will be the Brayloader BL.30, heavy-duty front-end loader, and the Dualoader DL.35 for front-end and overhead loading.

The Muir-Hill 2WL hydraulic loader, with eight items of equipment for use with it, will form the exhibit of E. Boydell and Co., Ltd., Elsinore Road, Old Trafford, Manchester, 16. The equipment will include five different buckets, a light dozer-blade attachment and a crane conversion unit, Industrial tractors with tipping-site equipment will be featured by the David Brown Companies, Meltham, Huddersfield.

Examples of the Atkinson municipal gritter will be exhibited by Atkinson's Agricultural Appliances, Ltd., EnterPrise Works, Kendal Street, Clitheroe, Lanes, on a Karrier chassis. Both a 7-ton and 50-cwt. gritting machine will be on view.

Gloster Tractors, Ltd., Puckleehurch, Bristol, are makers of a trailer gritting machine, the conveyor and spinner in which are driven by the road wheels of the trailer. An example of it will be available for inspection. A power loader working on the conveyor principle and incorporating its own electric motor will be displayed by R. A. Lister and Co., Ltd., Dursley, Glos. The Multi-Level model will deliver up to a maximum height of 17 ft. 6 in., and the PL.6 loader will deliver to a height of 3 ft. to 6 ft.

To be demonstrated by F. E. Weatherill, Ltd., Tewin Road, Welwyn Garden City, Herts, will be a hydraulic two-way overloader. With this machine the lorry to be loaded may be either at the front or rear of the appliance, as the scoop can be swung to whichever end is required. The normal scoop capacity is either I cu. yd. or 1 cu. yd., but when required for snow clearance a 14-cu.-yd. scoop of special design can be supplied.

Lacre Lorries, Ltd., 76 Bridge Road East, Welwyn Garden City, Herts, and Lewin Road Sweepers, Ltd., Victoria Works, West Bromwich, will have representative exhibits.
