a deficit of £21,000 had been incurred, contrasted with surpluses of £12,400 and £3,600 in the comparable two months of 1948 and 1949. Wages had gone up by £200,000 a year and fuel now cost £90,000 a year more. It was hoped to receive an additional £150,000 from the new rates.
Out of 75 main services operated last year, 40 were run at a loss. There was every indication that there would have to be a further application for increased rates.
Another large operator in the East Midland Traffic Area, East Midland Motor Services. Ltd., Chesterfield, has. filed an application for all-round variations. This proposes to add id. to all tickets up to 101d. carrying an odd hd., and Id. to the even-value tickets (3d.I Id.), with additions of 2d.-5d. on tickets between Is. and 3s. lid. Return fares costing 3d. to lid, would vary by Id., the increases rising to 8d. on the -6s. 6d.-6s. Md. tickets.
Announcing the application, which also affects some 30 routes in the Yorkshire Traffic Area, the company refor:ed to the possibility of a deficit of £110.000 in the next financial year. Wages had gone up by £26,000 and fuel by £44.000 a year in the past two years.
