Brooke agrees with other panel members that annual health checks over the age of 65 give sufficient peace of mind for elderly drivers to be allowed to carry on past the current pension age.
"Safety's not a major issue. You do get drivers over 70 and, in a lot of cases, they seem to specialise in just one area,"
But it is crucial that employers ensure older drivers are fit to do the job, given the potentially disastrous consequences if they should have an accident with a fully-loaded truck.
"It's not like stacking shelves where, if you drop something, you might get a bit of a bruise. It's very different if you lose control behind the wheel of an HGV."
