extending the retirement age for drivers could be crucial for offsetting the shortage of sufficient numbers of new drivers coming into the industry. And he believes existing medical regulations are stringent enough to ensure road safety.
"I think it's an absolute necessity," he says. "We need the manpower. It's in all our interests if everyone retires a bit later if they are able to do so. But, inevitably, some people will not be able to continue to drive."
Burke fears the industry's many small firms will not always be able to reassign drivers who fail medicals or who no longer want to continue driving HGVs.
"Many simply won't have the infrastructure to let someone who stops driving do something else instead." he says.
