is the grand old man of the panel. He is also proof, if it were needed, that drivers can continue to work long after the current retirement age. providing they remain fit, healthy and, crucially, want to carry on doing the job.
His decision to stay on was partly because his planned pension pot turned out to be a lot smaller than expected and partly because, as he says, he "liked the work".
Millard says: "I am in very good health, I don't need to wear glasses and I get through my medical perfectly each year.
"Plus, I pick and choose the jobs I do. But I still work five days a week, sometimes six."
But he concedes that not all drivers his age will be able to, or want to, carry on with the responsibility of taking fully-loaded
vehicles on busy roads. In those cases. he feels employers should allow drivers to quit HGV work and switch to something less demanding. "They should be able to do ligt van duties or office work,he says.
