AWELSH operator who drove his truck on the M25 with an insecure 19-tonne load of steel has been banned from driving for a year.

Graham Thomas of Bonymaen. Swansea pleaded guilty to dangerous driving at Guildford Crown Court last week, The court heard how police spotted Thomas driving west towards Leatherhead at 9.45am on 28 May 2003.

His truck was so badly loaded that the nearside trailer wheels had lifted off the road by up to six inches:The truck looked in danger of toppling over. Only the trailer's curtainside prevented the steel from flying off the truck.

Inspector Dick Joyce of the Surrey Police Strategic Roads Unit says he is relieved his officers were able to act swiftly and prevent a tragedy: "The consequences of the load shifting further while the lorry was being driven through the roadworks' narrow lanes may have resulted in death or serious injury.

-Dangerous driving in any circumstances will not be tolerated and a prosecution will be pursued. Criminal activity of this type has to be dealt with firmly so that our roads remain safe for the travelling public."

Thomas was fined 11,000 with £235 costs and was ordered to take a retest before regaining his licence.
